What is ADHD?
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common mental health disorder that appears during childhood. It’s a neurodevelopmental disorder that occurs because of changes in the structure and function of the brain that occur during early childhood development.

Inattentiveness

Impulsivity

Hyperactivity

What are the types of ADHD?

Inattentive type
Inattentive types have difficulty focusing and may make careless mistakes, seem to zone out during conversations, and struggle to follow instructions. Previously, an inattentive type was called attention deficit disorder (ADD). Now, ADD falls under the umbrella of ADHD.
Hyperactive/impulsive type
Hyperactive and impulsive type has excessive energy, trouble sitting still, and is very talkative. They also have a hard time waiting their turn.
Mixed type
Mixed type has both inattentive and hyperactive/impulsive symptoms.
How is ADHD diagnosed?

For children and teens, your provider may ask you and your child’s teacher to complete a symptom checklist. They use this information, plus a review of symptoms, medical history, and family history to develop a diagnosis.
